Top 13 Quarterbacks
Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers are the best quarterbacks in the NFL, right?
Would you say the next names that come to mind are Ben Roethlisberger, Philip Rivers, Tony Romo and Cam Newton? It might be slightly debatable with the next group, based on preference or something along those lines.
The next tier: Eli Manning, Joe Flacco, Carson Palmer, Russell Wilson, Matt Ryan and Matthew Stafford,
My question to you, where would you rank the highest paid player in the NFL coming off of an injury-riddled season? I believe Andrew Luck to rank in that second tier with MVP Newton, Big Ben & company. Luck has had some third tier-like moments but he’s played a lot better and makes the Colts a contender when healthy. That’s also the case with Romo. We’re splitting hairs here, so we could very well shuffled a couple of spots on the pecking order if you feel that Manning and Flacco should be elevated because of the hardware they’ve earned.
Youth vs. Veterans
There are the younger quarterbacks that have flashed some promise: Derek Carr, Blake Bortles, Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston.
Or some of the other veterans: Alex Smith and Andy Dalton. Ryan Fitzpatrick had a good season and I’d slate him right here, but he’s having contract issues that may push him to retire.
Then, you have the QBs that you don’t believe to be franchise quarterbacks but they’re better than the lower tier: Jay Cutler, Ryan Tannehill and Kirk Cousins.
The jury is still out on how good or bad, this group can be: Brock Osweiler, Sam Bradford, Teddy Bridgewater, Robert Griffin. I guess Geno Smith if he winds up starting for the Jets. What if A.J McCarron replaces Dalton one day or gets traded away?
Backups & Rookies
Colin Kaepernick lost his job to Blaine Gabbert under not one, but two head coaches now. We know who Mark Sanchez is. E.J. Manuel and Colt McCoy had their chances. Jared Goff is the only rookie expected to play in 2016. We will have to wait to see the other rookies: Carson Wentz, Paxton Lynch, Cody Kessler and Dak Prescott. Who knows if Connor Cook and Cardale Jones will be good enough to start one day?
Guys slated to be career backups: Brian Hoyer, Nick Foles, Mike Glennon, Jimmy Garappolo, Case Keenum, Brandon Weeden and Chase Daniel. Matt Schaub went from a reliable starter to being a backup for the rest of his career. Ryan Mallett turned out to be just another guy. Josh McCown actually retired and came back.
